Foods to Avoid & Eat to Boost Brain Health

For optimal brain health, it is important to adopt a brain-healthy diet. While eating healthy foods is good for the body in general, there are specific brain healthy foods that can help the brain avoid serious diseases such heart disease, diabetes, and other cancerous diseases.


Adopting a brain-healthy diet is actually easier than it seems. There are some foods to avoid and some foods to eat more of, but unlike weight loss ventures you will not need to cut out cake, chocolate, or other sugary and salty goodies. A brain-healthy diet is more about avoiding a few foods and increasing your intake of protective, brain-health foods.

So…let’s get the painful part out of the way. These are some common foods to avoid. When we are looking at “foods to avoid” for a brain-healthy diet, we aren’t actually looking at anything other than foods high in saturated fat. You can eat as many sweets as you want (well, within reason) as long as you avoid saturated fat. Saturated fat clogs your arteries and prevents the flow of blood and essential nutrients to the brain. Avoid foods high in saturated fat as much as possible to give your brain an immediate health boost.

The last “food” item on our “foods to avoid” list isn’t actually a “food” at all. It’s a beverage. Soda. Pop. Coke. Regardless of what you call it, you have to steer clear of these beverages if you want to benefit your brain. The good news here is that these drinks are also dangerous to other essential organs in your body and by giving them up you will be ushering in a new era of health for your body.

The list of foods to eat for great brain-health is long, but we’ve decided to focus on the three best foods to eat for brain health: leafy greens, flaxseed, and salmon.

Leafy green vegetables such as spinach and arugula contain a great percentage of B vitamins. B vitamins bring about healthy skin and healthy feelings. Serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are all feel-good hormones that are bodies use to combat things such as depression. B vitamins help our bodies to produce more of them directly affecting our mood.

Flax is the best source of ALA (alphalinoleic), which is a healthy fat that directly influences the inner workings of the cerebral cortex. This area of the brain is responsible for sensory information. If you’re looking to add more flax in your life, look for flaxseed chips or sprinkle flax onto a salad or into a smoothie.

Salmon is chock full of mega-3 fatty acids, which are responsible for building chunks of brain tissue. They have the ability to keep your sharp as well warding off Alzheimer’s disease with niacin. If you want to build up your thought prowess, look to salmon.
